Plantlovers: Invisible Botany of the Urban Environment - Alexandra Antih Střelcová

"Without plants, we literally could not even breathe, and yet we do not pay them nearly as much attention as we should. Why is that, and why are plants so important to humankind? In this part, among other things, you will learn how tropical plants made it to Europe, what trends have influenced (and still influence) plants in architecture and design, or how a worldwide economic shift was triggered by an experiment that accidentally involved a fern. In short, how we, humans, perceive plants."

The book Plantlovers: Invisible Botany of the Urban Environment maps the current phenomenon of houseplants in the context of the activities of the Prague initiative Haenke. It places it in broader social, cultural, and economic contexts in an effort to change established notions of plants - at home and in public spaces. It is accompanied by documentary photography by Vojtěch Veškrna, the winner of this year's Czech Grand Design awards, in a unique graphic design by typographer Jolana Sýkorová. All this is complemented by interviews with foreign authors, curators, and gardeners, such as British journalist Alice Vincent, design historian Penny Sparke, French design studio d-o-t-s, or fashion designer Tereza Rosalie Kladošová.

Author

Alexandra Antih Střelcová & Haenke: Haenke was founded at the beginning of 2017 by Julien Antih and Alexandra Střelcová with the aim to provide a reliable source of information about the use of plants in medicine and human health. The idea was born out of frustration with the lack of evidence-based knowledge available in formats comprehensible to the general public, particularly younger generations. Since then, they have collaborated with artists, designers, architects, and photographers to create experiences, objects, installations, photo reports, and other physical and online projects to raise awareness on this topic.
