The English Gardener's Garden - Tania Compton, Dr. Toby Musgrave
"Filmmaker Derek Jarman’s garden is one of the smallest yet most magical in this book. Decades after his death, it is still a cult destination on the bleak shingle headland at Dungeness. Created over eight years, it combines colourful planting with rusted metal sculptures and arrangements of weathered driftwood and flint. many of the plants are native to the landscape, so can tolerate the salt-laden winds, strong sun and low rainfall."
Almost fairytale journeys through English gardens from historical Renaissance treasures to the creations of contemporary designers. It presents more than 60 of the most stunning gardens that have blossomed on English soil over the past seven centuries. Each garden is described through engaging text and accompanied by breathtaking photographs. It is an invaluable guide for garden enthusiasts who long to discover beauty in the green paradise. This book is a valuable source of information for those seeking inspiration for garden design and planting - and an ideal gift for garden lovers - showcasing the lasting allure of English gardens and featuring gardens of historical figures and leading contemporary designers - Gertrude Jekyll, Sarah Price, William Robinson and Tom Stuart-Smith, to name but a few. The book The English Gardener's Garden presents historical national treasures such as the garden at Sissinghurst Castle and Blenheim Palace by Capability Brown along with contemporary examples including Lowther Castle by Dan Pearson and Prospect Cottage by Derek Jarman, and offers an accessible overview of more than 60 iconic and influential English gardens from the 16th century to the present day.
