Detailed information

Product detailed description

Japanese hand-crafted carpentry chisels by the brand Shusaku are created in the hands of master Iroi, a renowned Japanese blacksmith, whose workshop has been producing chisels since 1914. Chisels from his workshop, including the Oire, Tategu, and Tataki series, are valued for their exceptional hardening and extraordinarily sharp edges. These chisels are made from premium Shirogami White Steel and are designed to remain sharper for longer, ensuring you precision and control with every cut.

The Kinari Nomi is a specific type of Japanese carpentry chisel designed for very delicate, precise work, and finishing details without the use of a hammer or mallet. Compared to common chisels, like the Oire Nomi, the Kinari Nomi has a narrower profile and a finer edge. The long blade provides greater control and reach when working in difficult-to-access areas, such as inside intricate joins. Thanks to the beautifully designed red oak handle, the chisel is comfortable to hold, allowing you to work with ease and confidence.

It is typically used when working on traditional Japanese carpentry joints (tsugite), finishing details, or precision fitting – often where it is necessary to gently remove a thin layer of material. Like other Japanese chisels, the back of the blade is slightly concave, which facilitates sharpening and increases the precision of the cut.

Shusaku

The brand Shusaku is a registered trademark of M.Z. Trading Co., Ltd., located in the city of Miki in Hyōgo Prefecture – a traditional center of Japanese hand tool manufacturing. The company specializes in high-quality hand-crafted chisels, which are valued for their precise workmanship and exceptionally sharp edges.

Material

The double-layered blade is composed of high-quality carbon steel Shirogami White, laminated with relatively soft iron. The soft iron prevents brittleness and absorbs shocks associated with chisel use, while the carbon steel forming the edge ensures the highest durability, sharpness, and easiness to sharpen.
Lacquered red Japanese oak is used for the handle.

Note: Kinari chisels are primarily intended for single-handed use – they are held with one hand, usually closer to the end of the handle for better control. The other hand may be used to apply gentle pressure on the top part of the handle or to guide the chisel with the palm.

Maintenance

Use the chisels only with hand pressure - do not use hammers or wooden mallets.
After use, clean the blade and apply a thin layer of anti-corrosion oil, we recommend camellia.
Store the tool in a dry place, ideally in a wooden case or cloth cover.
The chisel needs regular sharpening with Japanese water stones – sharpening is done only on one (beveled) side, while the other (back) side is gently placed against the stone to maintain a straight contact edge.
