    Japanese Carpentry Chisel Shusaku Kinari Nomi

    Japanese handcrafted carpentry chisels by brand Shusaku are created in the hands of master Iroi, a renowned Japanese blacksmith whose workshop has been dedicated to making chisels since 1914. Chisels from his workshop, including the series Oire, Tategu, and Tataki, are valued for exceptional hardening and extraordinarily sharp edges. These chisels are made from premium Shirogami White Steel and are designed to stay sharper longer, ensuring you precision and control with every cut. The Kinari Nomi is a specific type of Japanese carpentry chisel designed for very fine, precise work and finishing details without the use of a hammer or mallet. Unlike regular chisels like the Oire Nomi, Kinari Nomi has a narrower profile and finer edge. The long blade provides greater control and reach when working in hard-to-access places, such as inside complex joints. With its beautifully designed red oak handle, the chisel is comfortable to hold, allowing you to work with ease and confidence. It is typically used when working on traditional Japanese carpentry joints (tsugite), finishing details, or precise fitting and often where a fine layer of material needs to be gently removed. As with other Japanese chisels, the back of the blade is slightly concave, making sharpening easier and increasing cut precision.

    Material

    The two-layer blade consists of high-quality Shirogami White carbon steel, laminated with relatively soft iron. The soft iron prevents brittleness and absorbs the impacts associated with chisel use, with the carbon steel forming the blade ensuring maximum durability, sharpness, and easy sharpening. For the handle, lacquered Japanese red oak is used.

    Note: Kinari chisels are primarily intended for one-handed use, typically held closer to the end of the handle for better control. The other hand may be used for gentle pressure on the upper part of the handle or for guiding the chisel with the palm.

    Maintenance

    Use the chisels only with hand pressure and avoid using hammers or wooden mallets. After use, clean the blade and apply a thin layer of anti-corrosion oil, we recommend camellia. Store the tool in a dry place, ideally in a wooden case or cloth cover. The chisel must be regularly sharpened with Japanese whetstones. Sharpening is carried out exclusively on one (the slanted) side, with the other (back) side only gently rested on the stone to maintain a straight contact edge.
