Product detailed description

Japanese Woodworking Chisels Shusaku Oire Nomi

Shusaku’s handcrafted Japanese woodworking chisels are crafted by Master Iroi, a renowned Japanese blacksmith whose workshop has been producing chisels since 1914. The chisels from his workshop, including the Oire, Tategu, and Tataki series, are prized for their exceptional hardening and incredibly sharp edges. They are made from the highest quality carbon steel and solid Japanese red oak. The Oire Nomi is the most common and versatile type of Japanese woodworking chisel. It is used for a wide range of tasks, from rough shaping to fine finishing details. It has a shorter blade than other types of Japanese chisels and is ideal for both hand-held and hammered work. It can be used with both a wooden mallet and a metal hammer and is suitable for working with both soft and hard wood. The back of the blade, called the ura, has a gentle concave recess that is ground during production. This recess facilitates sharpening, as less material needs to be removed when restoring the edge. At the same time, it ensures better contact with the workpiece, allowing for cleaner and more precise cuts. The oak handle features a conical steel ferrule at its end, which transfers the impact to the blade and protects the wood from damage caused by repeated hammer blows. Before using a Japanese carpenter’s chisel for the first time, it is usually necessary to properly seat the ferrule. However, Shusaku chisels come with the ferrule already firmly in place, so they are ready to use right out of the box.

Material

The two-layer blade consists of high-quality Shirogami White carbon steel, laminated with relatively soft iron. The soft iron prevents brittleness and absorbs the impacts associated with chisel use, with the carbon steel forming the blade ensuring maximum durability, sharpness, and easy sharpening. For the handle, lacquered Japanese red oak is used.

Maintenance

After use, clean the blade and apply a thin layer of anti-corrosion oil, we recommend camellia. Check the handle hoop occasionally and if it starts to wobble, remove it, adjust the wood slightly and reinsert it correctly. Store the tool in a dry place, ideally in a wooden case or cloth cover. The chisel must be regularly sharpened with Japanese whetstones. Sharpening is carried out exclusively on one (the slanted) side, with the other (back) side only gently rested on the stone to maintain a straight contact edge.
