You don’t need much for your first fishing rod. A shallow river, a straight hazel branch, a little fishing line, a float and a hook. Children can spend hours here walking around with a net, turning over stones or simply watching the surface. And when they grow tired of fishing, they start discovering everything else the river has to offer.
Rivers like these are ideal for a first attempt at fishing. There is plenty of space for endless casting, and the first bite usually comes before a child’s patience starts to run out. All you need to do is find a straight hazel branch, strip off the bark and trim away the small twigs. An ordinary branch suddenly takes on a new meaning. Just moments ago it was lying on the ground, and a few minutes later it has become a rod ready for its first cast. It isn’t perfect. It’s their own.
Fishing teaches patience in a way that cannot be planned. Not because children have to wait for a long time, but because they discover for themselves that some things cannot be rushed. Between casts, there is plenty of time to look around, listen to the water and notice things that would otherwise go unseen. In the end, it often doesn’t matter how many fish they manage to catch. Much more important is the time spent together outdoors.
