Product detailed description

Japanese Okubo Scissors by Tsurumaki Hamono

Okubo shears are among the most popular and versatile traditional gardening shears in Japan. They are considered the fundamental cornerstone of every Japanese gardener's toolkit. They can be used for tending to garden plants and bonsai, as well as for flower arranging. They are excellent for cutting soft shoots, perennials, and herbs, but can also be used for lighter shaping cuts or during fruit and vegetable harvesting. The design of the shears carries a 500-year-old tradition dating back to the Edo period. The Tsurumaki blacksmith workshop forges its Okubo shears with an emphasis on perfect balance and a solid center section, giving the shears excellent leverage. The characteristic looped handles are designed to efficiently transfer the force of the entire hand directly into the blades. In addition to comfort during use, they also provide ample space for operating with gardening gloves. The blades, made from premium Aogami carbon steel, remain razor-sharp even after months of intensive use. Unlike specialized shears like the Koryu or Ikenobo types, the Okubo features wider blades with a more obtuse edge angle. There is more material behind the cutting edge, which gives the shears greater mechanical durability while still retaining their renowned precision and cleanliness of cut. The body of the shears features a slip-resistant Kurouchi finish, which increases corrosion resistance, and is complemented by a stainless steel screw. This screw prevents any unwanted blade misalignment while allowing for easy adjustments and a perfectly smooth operation.

Material

Aogami Blue #2 is a traditional Japanese carbon steel alloyed with tungsten and chromium. It excels in exceptional edge retention, yet remains relatively easy to sharpen despite its high hardness. Perfect sharpness also depends on the precise alignment of the cutting edges and blade backs. Therefore, the shears are fitted with a stainless steel screw that prevents any unwanted blade misalignment while allowing for easy adjustments and a smooth operation.

Maintenance

Ikenobo shears are made of carbon steel, so regular blade care is essential. Always clean and dry the shears thoroughly after each use. Periodically coat them with camellia oil or another tool oil, allow it to soak in, and then wipe off any excess. These shears are designed specifically for live, green, and fresh stems or twigs. Do not use them on dry, hard branches found on the ground or old, dead wood; such material acts more like stone and can easily damage or chip the hard carbon steel.
