Detailed information

Product detailed description

Ikenobo Scissors by Tsurumaki Hamono

Ikenobo shears are designed for cutting and arranging flowers. The name Ikenobo represents the oldest and most prestigious school of Ikebana (the traditional art of Japanese flower arrangement), which still exclusively uses this specific type of tool. At first glance, Ikenobo shears are easily recognizable by their distinctive Warabi-te style handles, which curve into small loops resembling curled fern fronds. This shape also provides a practical advantage - the rounded end of the handle can be used to crush the ends of hard, woody branches, significantly improving water absorption. The shears are crafted from premium Aogami carbon steel, renowned for its exceptional edge retention even with frequent use. The blades feature an extremely sharp angle that cleanly slices through standard stems without crushing their delicate plant fibers. This allows the flowers to absorb moisture better and stay fresh longer. The handles feature a traditional, slip-resistant Kurouchi finish, which increases corrosion resistance and improves grip, complemented by a stainless steel screw. This screw prevents any unwanted blade misalignment while allowing for easy adjustments and a perfectly smooth operation. This allows you to precisely fine-tune the shears according to the thickness of smaller stems or thinner twigs; however, the tool remains intended for detailed work and is not built for cutting thick, fully woody branches.

Material

Aogami Blue #2 is a traditional Japanese carbon steel alloyed with tungsten and chromium. It excels in exceptional edge retention, yet remains relatively easy to sharpen despite its high hardness. Perfect sharpness also depends on the precise alignment of the cutting edges and blade backs. Therefore, the shears are fitted with a stainless steel screw that prevents any unwanted blade misalignment while allowing for easy adjustments and a smooth operation.

Maintenance

Ikenobo shears are made of carbon steel, so regular blade care is essential. Always clean and dry the shears thoroughly after each use. Periodically coat them with camellia oil or another tool oil, allow it to soak in, and then wipe off any excess. These shears are designed specifically for live, green, and fresh stems or twigs. Do not use them on dry, hard branches found on the ground or old, dead wood; such material acts more like stone and can easily damage or chip the hard carbon steel.
