Product detailed description

Japanese Scissors Koedakiri from Tsurumaki Hamono

Koedakiri shears are specially designed for the precise cutting of live twigs, shaping shrubs, and bonsai care. They are ideal for detailed work and intended for cutting thin twigs up to 4 mm in diameter. Thanks to their specific construction featuring an extended neck and a short, stout blade, you can easily reach even the most inaccessible spots deep inside the canopy of a bonsai or shrub. The narrow gap between the handles aids in targeted cuts on individual twigs and new shoots, ensuring perfect precision every time. In Japan, many gardeners use them as a tool for final touches, such as pinching pine buds or trimming young shoots. They feel light in the hand and provide a stable feedback right down to the very tip, which you will appreciate when maximum precision is required for the task. The blades, made from premium Aogami #2 carbon steel, feature a traditional blackened Kurouchi finish that protects the shears from corrosion. A precise stainless steel screw ensures a perfectly smooth operation with the option for custom adjustment.

Material

Aogami Blue #2 is a traditional Japanese carbon steel alloyed with tungsten and chromium. It excels in exceptional edge retention, yet remains relatively easy to sharpen despite its high hardness. Perfect sharpness also depends on the precise alignment of the cutting edges and blade backs. Therefore, the shears are fitted with a stainless steel screw that prevents any unwanted blade misalignment while allowing for easy adjustments and a smooth operation.

Maintenance

Ikenobo shears are made of carbon steel, so regular blade care is essential. Always clean and dry the shears thoroughly after each use. Periodically coat them with camellia oil or another tool oil, allow it to soak in, and then wipe off any excess. These shears are designed specifically for live, green, and fresh stems or twigs. Do not use them on dry, hard branches found on the ground or old, dead wood; such material acts more like stone and can easily damage or chip the hard carbon steel.
