Tools for Food: The Objects that Influence How and What We Eat - Corinne Mynatt
“The landscape of food propagation, production and consumption has changed beyond recognition, and we must reclaim a closer relationship to food. Perhaps the pleasure of using a well-designed tool, understanding its origins, cooking and enjoying meals together can somehow salvage a productive relationship with food, through an appreciation of design and our evolution from using just fire, knives and spoons to a batterie de cuisine.”
From 12th century Mongolian fire places to 17th century Chinese scissors, from beloved Tupperware food containers to the iconic Alessi lemon squeezer - this culinary journey includes favorite objects and lesser-known things. From primitive tools to top-notch items conceived by brands like Le Creuset, Joseph Joseph, IKEA, Tala, Rosti, Pyrex, Oxo Good Grips, Droog, Staub, and many others, the reader embarks on a journey around the world to understand how and what has changed in cooking over the centuries, and reveals similarities and diversities across times and cultures. Each image, from basic necessities to design objects, is accompanied by a text describing its origin and interesting facts about its relation to culture and cooking.
