Dark water - two nights in Ostrava

Dark water - two nights in Ostrava

everyday moments

Moravice is just a short distance from Ostrava, but it feels much farther. Darker water, long drawn-out currents, and a forest tightly enclosed around the river. This time, we went by train - in the morning from Prague to Ostrava Svinov, rented a car, and set up a base in the city for two nights. Water during the day, returning to Ostrava in the evenings. Filtered coffee in Poruba, sandwich on sourdough bread, several hours along the river and slow evenings after a full day outside.

Ostrava base

Upon arrival at Ostrava Svinov, we rented a car directly at the station from Sixt. Exactly the kind of logistics that works simply - get off the train, take the keys, and in a moment be on your way towards the river. The base for the entire trip was Sareza Hotel. Moravice during the day, returning to the city in the evenings.

Morning routine

Every morning started similarly. A short stop in Poruba, filtered coffee at CØKAFE, and a sandwich on sourdough bread before heading to the stream. Then it was just the road leading out of Ostrava and the gradual change of landscape. Moravice 3P mainly surprised us with how long it took to find the right spots.

Podhradí

Access to the water is not entirely easy and there were more people around some sections than we expected. Tourists, cycle paths, cottages along the shore. Some parts felt more like a weekend trail than a trout stream. We ended up around Podhradí. Right by the bridge, a nice deeper pool and several long paddles along the forest. It was exactly there that Moravice started to function as we had imagined. Currents, darker water, and a calmer pace. One rather walks along the water observing the flow than constantly changing flies.

Moravice 3P

The stream leads from the former weir above the wooden bridge in Větřkovice to the road bridge in the village of Zálužné. The section is about 12 kilometers long and is among the most interesting trout streams in northern Moravia. Here, the river combines wider drawn-out currents, deeper calmer sections, and shorter rocky paddles. It is characterized by darker water, forests closely around the banks, and a more natural character than most smaller Czech trout streams. Although the stream is just a short distance from Ostrava, in some places it feels surprisingly distant and calm. Mainly brown trout and grayling are fished here, but it is not a completely easy water - access to the river can be more complicated in places and you have to walk a bit to find the right sections.

Dark water

There were surprisingly many fly fishers. Fewer fish, though. But that really wasn't important. Moravice worked mainly with its atmosphere. In some places, it felt almost northern - dark water, deeper drawn-out currents, and forest closed tightly around the river. The longer you were there, the more you started to perceive the details. The best were the early evenings. The last light remained atop the treetops, while below by the water it was almost dark. The current slowed, everything quieted, and you felt much farther from the city than you actually were.

Back in the city

Evening returns back to Ostrava. Refreshment after a whole day outside, the next morning again Poruba, filtered coffee, and the journey to the water. Meanwhile, a few stops at Bistro Mimo Mísu and slow evenings after several hours along the river. The whole trip was really mainly about contrast. Industrial Ostrava and a few dozen minutes away a dark river enclosed in the forest. Morning station, several hours by the water, and returns back to the city. Moravice may not be the easiest or most readable water. But that's precisely what's good about it. You have to walk a bit to get to know it.
