What is the difference between the Toyo Steel T-190 and T-192?
The Toyo Steel T-190 and T-192 are among the smallest boxes made by Japanese manufacturer Toyo Steel, and at first glance they are easy to confuse. They have the same length and width, the same opening mechanism, and can be stacked on top of each other. The only difference is the height – and it is precisely those 21 millimetres that determine which one will be more practical for a particular use.
The T-190 measures 203 × 109 × 56 mm, while the shallower T-192 measures 203 × 109 × 35 mm. Viewed from above, the two boxes are therefore identical. You will only notice the difference when you place them side by side or start considering what to store in them.

T-190: more vertical space
T-190 is the more versatile of the two. Its height of 56 mm provides enough room for small tools, a tape measure, scissors, brushes, cables or other items that no longer need to remain in a single layer.
Its depth is both its advantage and its limitation. More things fit in the box, but very small items may start to pile up on top of one another. If we were choosing our first Toyo Steel from these two models without a specific purpose in mind, we would choose the T-190. Its greater depth simply leaves more possibilities for what the box can ultimately be used for.
T-192: everything more visible
T-192 uses exactly the same footprint, but its height is only 35 mm. It offers less space, but small items do not layer on top of one another as much. This is practical for things you want to see and pick up quickly after opening the box – pencils, pens, drill bits, small fasteners, sewing supplies or smaller tools.
We like the T-192 precisely because of its limitation. Its reduced depth makes you think a little more about what belongs in the box, and as a result it works surprisingly well for small items. It also fits in a shallow drawer or on a shelf where a taller box would unnecessarily take up space. It is therefore not simply a smaller T-190. It uses the same surface area in a different way.
Same footprint, two depths
The difference may look insignificant on paper, but in a box this small, 21 mm is quite a lot. The T-190 has an outer height approximately 60% greater than the T-192. That is why, when choosing, it is more useful to think about how you will store things rather than just about the box's overall size.

The T-190 and T-192 can be combined
The identical base dimensions offer one more advantage. The T-190 and T-192 can be stacked on top of each other and combined in a single arrangement. Toyo Steel uses characteristic circular indentations on the top of the lids. Together with the shape of the bottom section, they help the boxes stay in place when stacked. You therefore do not have to choose just one height. The shallower T-192 can be used for small items that you want to keep neatly laid out, while the T-190 below or above it can hold bulkier equipment. The entire arrangement still takes up an area of only 203 × 109 mm.
T-190 or T-192?
We would choose the T-190 first. The T-192 would probably be our second choice. The T-190 is more versatile, and its greater depth is more forgiving. The T-192 becomes more interesting when you already have a fairly clear idea of what you will put in it and appreciate having small items remain neatly arranged next to one another. If you need both, the two models are designed to work together. They are not merely two heights of the same box. They are two slightly different ways of using the same surface area.
