Product detailed description

Chopstick Set Hyotan Tsuchinao Shikki

The gourd (hyotan) motif is a traditional Japanese symbol of health, a good harvest, and protection from bad luck. Chopsticks featuring this motif are therefore a popular wedding and anniversary gift, as well as a personal talisman. This set comes from the Tsuchinao Shikki workshop in the Echizen region, where lacquerware has been produced for centuries. The natural wood chopsticks are decorated with a delicate golden motif applied by hand-spraying metallic powder onto still-wet lacquer. The different lengths and colors correspond to the paired design.

What began as a family workshop has grown into a team of fifteen craftspeople and is also involved in training the next generation of lacquer artisans.

Material and maintenance

The tips of the chopsticks are infused with natural urushi lacquer, which is completely non-toxic and provides a non-slip feel when in contact with food. The handles are treated with a thin layer of durable polyurethane, which protects the wood from moisture and permanently fixes the hand-applied decoration against abrasion.

After use, hand-wash the chopsticks with lukewarm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft sponge, then dry them immediately. Avoid scouring pads and abrasive cleaning products. Do not use a dishwasher or microwave, and do not leave them submerged in water for an extended period, as this could damage the lacquer or deform the wood.

Good to Know

If the lacquer is deeply scratched or damaged down to the wood itself, discontinue using the chopsticks. This does not pose a danger from the lacquer, but bacteria and moisture could accumulate in the exposed wood.

Tsuchinao Lacquerware je dílčí výrobce tradičního Echizen lacquerware, tedy lakovaného řemeslného zboží z regionu Sabae v prefektuře Fukui, který je jedním z hlavních center japonského lakýrnického řemesla. Tsuchinao patří do širší tradice echizenské lakýrnické školy, ale zároveň kombinuje klasické techniky s moderními nápady a designem, čímž rozšiřuje tradiční sortiment o nové formy a produkty.
