Detailed information

Product detailed description

Japanese hand-crafted carpentry chisels by the brand Shusaku are created by Master Iroi, a renowned Japanese blacksmith, whose workshop has been dedicated to the production of chisels since 1914. Chisels from his workshop, including the Oire, Tategu, and Tataki series, are esteemed for their exceptional tempering and extraordinarily sharp edges. High-quality carbon steel and solid red Japanese oak are used in their production.

Oire Nomi is the most common and versatile type of Japanese carpentry chisel. It is used for a wide range of tasks – from rough shaping to fine finishing details. It has a shorter blade than other types of Japanese chisels and is ideal for hand usage as well as with a mallet. It can be used both with a wooden mallet and a metal hammer, and is suitable for working with both soft and hard wood.

The back side of the blade – called ura – has a delicate concave hollow that is ground during production. This cavity facilitates sharpening, as less material needs to be removed when restoring the edge. It also ensures better contact with the material being worked on, which allows for cleaner and more precise cuts.

The oak handle has a conical steel collar at its end, which transfers blows to the blade and protects the wood from damage during repeated hammer strikes. Before first use, a Japanese carpentry chisel's collar usually needs to be properly set. However, Shusaku chisels have this collar already firmly in place, making them ready for use immediately after unboxing.

Shusaku

The Shusaku brand is a registered trademark of M.Z. Trading Co., Ltd., located in the city of Miki in the Hyōgo prefecture – a traditional center of Japanese hand tool manufacturing. The company specializes in high-quality hand-crafted chisels that are valued for their precise workmanship and exceptionally sharp edges.

Material

The two-layer blade is made of high-quality Shirogami White carbon steel, laminated with relatively soft iron. The soft iron prevents brittleness and absorbs impacts associated with the use of the chisel, while the carbon steel making up the cutting edge provides maximum durability, sharpness, and is easy to sharpen.
For the handle, lacquered red Japanese oak is used.

Note: The chisels come in an original cardboard box.

Maintenance

After use, dry the blade and apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil. Occasionally check the collar on the handle - if it starts to wobble, remove it, slightly adjust the wood and correctly reattach it.
Store the tool in a dry place, ideally in a wooden case or cloth cover.
The chisel should be regularly sharpened with Japanese water stones – sharpening is done exclusively on one (slanted) side, the other (back) side is only gently laid against the stone to maintain a straight contact edge.
