Product detailed description

Japanese Carpenter's Chisels Iwasaki Oire Nomi

Japanese handmade carpenter's chisels are crafted in the hands of master Hidari Nagasuke in the Iwasaki Nomi workshop, which is considered one of the best chisel makers in Japan. They are made using high-quality carbon steel and solid red Japanese oak wood. The Oire Nomi is the most common and versatile type of Japanese carpenter's chisel. It is used for a wide range of tasks - from quick shaping to fine finishing details. It has a shorter blade than other types of Japanese chisels and is ideal for working by hand and with a mallet. It can be used with both a wooden mallet and a metal hammer. It is suitable for work with both soft and hard wood. The back of the blade, called ura, has a gentle concave hollow that is ground during manufacturing. This hollow facilitates sharpening as less material needs to be removed when renewing the edge. It also ensures better contact with the material being worked on, allowing for cleaner and more precise cuts. The oak handle features a conical steel ferrule at its end, which transfers strikes to the blade and protects the wood from damage during repeated hammer strikes. Before first use, the metal ferrule needs to be properly seated. First, it is removed, the wood underneath is lightly sanded or tapped down for a better fit, then reattached, and gently hammered into place so that it holds firmly and doesn't protrude above the end of the handle. Finally, the top edge of the wood is lightly peened to ensure the ferrule securely embraces the wood.

Manufacturer

Iwasaki Chisel Factory is a traditional Japanese workshop specializing in the handmade production of high-quality carpenter's chisels and other tools. It is located in the city of Miki in Hyōgo Prefecture, known for its long blacksmithing history. The workshop is led by Mr. Eisuke Iwasaki, and the production involves traditional handcrafting based on the over thousand-year-old steel processing technique called tatara. This method involves smelting iron ore in a furnace for up to 70 hours continuously, resulting in high-quality steel.

Material

The dual-layered blade is made up of high-quality carbon steel Shirogami White #2, laminated with relatively soft iron. The soft iron prevents brittleness and absorbs the impacts associated with using the chisel, while the carbon steel forming the edge ensures the highest durability, sharpness, and ease of sharpening. The surface of the blade is coated with an anti-corrosion varnish. For the handle, lacquered red Japanese oak is used.

Maintenance

After use, dry the blade and apply a thin layer of anti-corrosion oil, such as camellia oil. Occasionally check the ferrule on the handle - if it starts to wobble, remove it, adjust the wood slightly, and reattach it properly. Store the tool in a dry place, ideally in a wooden case or fabric pouch. The chisel needs to be regularly sharpened with Japanese water stones - sharpening is done exclusively on one (slanted) side, while the other (rear) side is only gently placed on the stone to maintain a straight contact edge.
