Detailed information

Product detailed description

Traditional Japanese Wooden Mallet from Asaka Industrial

The wooden mallet is an essential tool in a carpenter's or woodcarver's workshop. In Japan, it is traditionally used for assembling furniture and other wooden structures, driving joints, and adjusting the blades of a plane. It can tap various materials without causing damage. It is also ideal for use with woodworking and carving chisels with wooden handles, especially for lighter work (small incisions or carving sculptural details, etc.). Mallets from Asaka Industries are made in Japan from carefully selected natural wood. Their head is sturdy and durable. The handle fits well in the hand and has a hole at the end for a strap.

Manufacturer

The Japanese company Asaka was founded in 1661 as a wholesaler of sharp tools and cutlery, such as kitchen knives, during a time when samurai still lived in Japan. When the country opened to the West, sometime in the early 1890s, the then-president of the company began to develop shovels in anticipation of increased engineering and construction activities. Since 1905, Asaka has been using its logo - a golden elephant holding a shovel in its trunk, symbolizing strength and flexibility, firmly standing on the ground. The company continues to be headquartered in its place of origin, the city of Sakai (Osaka Prefecture), and manufactures all products in its Japanese factories. It draws from its more than 300-year tradition and uses its own sophisticated heat treatment technology, which provides the blades of its shovels and spades with hardness and flexibility.

Material

Both the head and the handle are wooden. The head is lacquered.

Note:
The structure and shades of the wood may slightly differ from those shown in the photos. Only the smallest size mallet has a loop for hanging.

Maintenance

The head of the mallet is not fixed to the handle and needs to be secured before first use. Lightly tapping the end of the handle on a hard surface (table, floor) helps the head to naturally "sit" and strengthen the joint– initially, as the use begins, the head naturally settles deep onto the handle and the joint becomes even more secure. This is a traditional Japanese method without adhesives. If necessary, glue or a wooden wedge can be added.
The mallet does not require any special maintenance. Always check before use to ensure that the handle or hammer head is not cracked or broken. Do not use mallets on hard materials such as concrete, stone, or for driving metal nails.
