    Hand Cultivator Sneeboer

    Caring for garden beds requires regular aeration and loosening of the soil crust without turning over the lower layers of soil. The two-pronged cultivator from the Sneeboer forge cuts through the soil at the required depth and improves the access of air and water to plant roots. The shape of its curved tines is based on a traditional German tool called „Sauzahn“ (boar’s tooth), which imitates the way wild boars loosen the soil while searching for food. The narrow profile of the blades allows safe movement in densely planted beds, as well as weed removal or the preparation of straight seed furrows.

    Manufacturer

    The Dutch forge Sneeboer & Zn is based in the town of Bovenkarspel and has specialized in the handcrafting of garden tools since 1913. The company was founded by Arend Sneeboer and is now run by the fourth generation of the family. The manufacturer combines traditional forging techniques with the use of stainless steel and local ash wood from sustainably managed forests.

    Material and maintenance

    Sneeboer combines two types of stainless steel: a tougher alloy for attaching the handle and a more malleable steel for the blade itself. The individual parts are welded, ground, and polished by hand. The handle is made of ash wood.


    After use, clean the metal part of dirt and wipe it dry. Before longer-term storage or in case of frequent use, treat both the metal head and wooden handle with camellia oil, which protects the steel against corrosion and the wood against drying out. Store the tool in a dry place and use a sharpening stone or puck for sharpening.

    Good to know

    The cultivator is intended for use in loose to moderately compacted soil. Do not use it to pry up large stones or cut through thick woody roots. Keep out of reach of children.
