    Joseph Marples England Flat Screwdriver

    Traditional cabinetmakers’ screwdrivers have been part of British workshops since the 19th century. They were developed for the needs of furniture makers working with hardwood and slotted wood screws. The blade from Joseph Marples is forged from carbon steel and hand-ground without the use of machine templates. The oval beech handle prevents twisting in the palm, while the brass ferrule protects the wood from cracking under load. The screwdriver is particularly useful when installing hinges and hardware and for countersinking screws into hardwood. The parallel-ground tip fits precisely into the slot, minimising the risk of slipping and damaging the wood.

    Materials and Care

    The blade is made of hardened carbon steel, which excels in strength but requires protection from moisture. The handle consists of beech wood joined with a brass ferrule.


    After use, clean the blade of dirt and moisture and wipe it dry. Regularly treat the metal parts with camellia or mineral oil as a preventive measure against corrosion. Store the tool in a dry place.
